Discussion Prompt 4 "Claiming an Education"
Question 1
First off let me say that this is one of the most influential pieces of literature I have ever came across and that these two particular paragraphs concur with all of my morals and beliefs. This passage can generally apply to anyone who has ever gone against the grain or contrary beliefs of others. In this passage Rich gives examples of personal responsibilities such as pushing yourself forward and demanding that you be treated with respect. These qualities are not ones selective to a certain group or sex but in reality are life liberties in which every person has the right to obtain. Rich discusses ones personal responsibility to their body and mind. She states how they are connected as one and that you can not have one without the other. This is a life value that relates to every being, male, female, black, white we all have a personal responsibility that we owe to protect our body and mind. In the second paragraph Rich discusses the responsibility one has to their work and studies and the commitment you must make to always do our best. This logic applies to everyone we must always strive to bring forth the best qualities that lye within ourselves rich or poor black or white we deserve it to ourselves.
Question 2
I believe that when Rich uses the term "ethical and intellectual contract" she is referring to situations of moral and educational values. I believe that in class students agree to do their best and remain focused in their studies. I believe that teachers agree to teach to the best of their ability and to treat each student as an individual rather than a sterotype. The larger ethical goal is that they respect one another as people and encourage only the best from each other. The connection between ethical and intellectual concerns for both Rich and myself is that many of these values go overlooked and unpracticed.
